A Spotlight on Leo: A Civil Technologist
At co-elevate, we believe in fostering an environment where employees have the autonomy to grow, innovate, and make a real impact.
Leo is a graduate of Civil Engineering Technology from Fanshawe College. He joined co-elevate in January, 2024. What drew him to co-elevate was the rare opportunity to help build a department from the ground up, allowing him the flexibility and independence to shape processes and take ownership of his work.
Initially discovering co-elevate through an Indeed posting, Leo took the initiative to research the company and was intrigued by its values and approach. However, what surprised him most after joining was how genuinely the company lived up to its commitment to a positive work environment. Many organizations promise a great culture, but Leo was impressed by how co-elevate truly goes above and beyond to support its employees’ well-being and development.
Leo’s first few months were a deep dive into learning and adaptation. Coming from a background in public works, he had to adjust to the nuances of private-sector civil engineering. Fortunately, the company’s approach to professional growth—providing the tools and support needed while allowing autonomy in development—helped him transition smoothly.
His proudest achievement so far? Helping to build an efficient and high-functioning civil department from scratch alongside his teammates. It’s no small feat, and the work they’ve put in has already begun to make an impact.
Joamie Court, Iqaluit, Nunavut
One of Leo’s most memorable projects was a project in Iqaluit, Nunavut. The project required him to dive deep into the unique challenges of the northern climate, from permafrost considerations to extreme weather conditions.
Leo is continuously expanding his expertise, recently earning his OACETT Certified Technician (C.Tech) designation. This certification required two years of experience, a college diploma, professional references, and passing the Professional Practice Exam. Additionally, he completed the Good Roads Sewer and Watermain Construction Inspection course—an essential qualification for working with municipalities and advancing in public works.
Beyond his professional achievements, Leo has been training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for eight years and holds a purple belt, a testament to his dedication and discipline. He’s also passionate about beach volleyball and tennis.
For those just starting in the field, Leo’s advice is simple but powerful:
“Be open to new challenges. It’s very important to diversify and expand your skillset.”
We’re lucky to have Leo on our team, and we can’t wait to see how he continues to contribute to the growth of our civil department!
